Cost Reimbursement for Lost Wages, Travel & Lodging

The Donor Care Network wants to ensure that the financial burdens of kidney donation are minimized. Donors who donate through a Donor Care Network Center are eligible for reimbursement of lost wages up to $1,500 per week for up to six weeks, and up to $3,000 in travel and lodging expenses for themselves and a caregiver. Lost wage reimbursement beyond two weeks requires additional clearance from the transplant center.

Prioritization for a Living Donor Kidney Transplant

Any donor who registers through the Donor Care Network and donates through the National Kidney Registry will receive prioritization for a living donor kidney transplant in the unlikely case that they need a kidney transplant in the future.

Donation Life & Disability Insurance

Any donor who registers through the Donor Care Network and donates through the National Kidney Registry is automatically given a donor life insurance policy with a $1,000,000 principal amount and a donor disability policy that covers up to $1,500 per week in coverage for missed work related to any kidney donation complications that may arise for up to 365 days after surgery.

Legal Support for Issues Related to Kidney Donation

Donors protected by Donor Shield are provided free legal support for unlawful employment termination, health insurance discrimination, life insurance discrimination, or other issues directly related to kidney donation.

Donation Complication Protection

The Donor Care Network ensures that donors never have to pay for a post-surgical complication cost that is a result of their kidney donation, including any co-pays. If you have a complication related to your kidney donation, Donor Shield will reimburse you for medical expenses not covered by insurance, as well as lost wages, travel and lodging.
